Latest Sabathia Rumors

Posted on: July 5, 2008 9:21 pm

ESPN's Buster Olney and the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt have the latest C.C. Sabathia trade rumors this evening.

  • Olney says the Brewers restructured their offer today.  That offer is believed to include Matt LaPorta plus lesser prospects.  Haudricourt suspects those prospects might be Taylor Green and Lorenzo Cain.  Haudricourt says the Indians have the Brewers' offer in hand and Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin is waiting to hear back.  Olney says the Brewers are looking at some Plan B starters in case they don't win the Sabathia sweepstakes.
  • Olney also has the Rays, Dodgers, and Phillies in the Sabathia talks.  Those teams all have their issues.  The Rays may not have the motivation, the Dodgers are being vague about who's available, and the Phillies' best talent is at the lower levels.

Latest Sabathia Rumors

The Brewers current offfer of LaPorta, Green and Cain does not make sense for the Indians.  LaPorta is a great talent, but realistically, he may called up sometime in the middle of 2009 (best case).  Both Green and Cain are 3-4 years away.  The Indians are better off keeping CC the rest of the year and try to sign him.  This current trade puts the Indians too far back.  Additionally, Green and Cain are above average, lower level prospects.  The Indians can do better just by letting CC leave as a free agent and getting two draft picks.  The Indians need an MLB ready player and they should go after Weeks.  They are in need of an improvement at 2B and a leadoff hitter.  Sizemore is too good for leadoff.  If Weeks is not available, they should counter with Gamel and LaPorta.  Despite both these players not making an impact until 2009 or 2010, it would be worth it.  Here is my suggestion: Sabathia, Blake, and Bentancort for Weeks, LaPorta, Green, and Cain.
